Northwoods Camping Trip

Filed under: Students — Victoria Rydberg @ 9:22 am

Please share your thoughts on the camping trip so we can improve for next year. I realize that you are disappointed that we didn’t get to go the sea caves because of the weather, but, you know why I couldn’t risk losing you… (all the paperwork). Consider the following questions:

1. How were the activities? – Apostle Islands Lakeshore National Park and short hike, Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center (lighthouse huge building)/hike, downtown Ashland, Northland College Visit, Copper Falls hike, Brule River Canoeing.

2. How were the camping arrangements (the site, transportation, etc.)?

3. How was the food? – School lunches, dinner at the Platter Restaurant, breakfasts, fastfood

4. Would you /Should we do it again?

5. Other thoughts or comments?

Aldo Leopold Weekend in Review

Filed under: Students — Victoria Rydberg @ 9:08 am

First thought: Why do we hold Aldo Leopold Weekend? Is it a worthwhile project for the class? Is Aldo Leopold someone we should be focusing on, why?
Second thought: how did the planning process go? (Getting speakers, food, handing out flyers, etc.) What was difficult about the process? How could it be improved?
Third thought: how did the actual weekend go? was the timing good? was it too long, too short? how was the pot-luck, the readings, the bench building?
Fourth thought: what should we do different for next year?
Fifth thought: How did I feel overall about the weekend?

Responding to Seedfolks

Filed under: Students — Victoria Rydberg @ 8:14 am

I found out that  Seedfolks by Paul Fleishman is a very popular book for students your age. We are not alone in studying diversity, tolerance, community and gardens! These are some of the questions that other teachers have asked their students. How would you answer these?

Who is your favorite character?  Do any of the characters remind you of real people in your own life?

Have you ever had an experience of people who didn’t know each other coming together to create something bigger than all of them?

Travis says that “good deeds are contagious.”  Have you ever done a good deed and then were surprised to see it passed on?
